I have an existing tank which has been up and running for the past year. In the beginnig, due to being a newbie to fish keeping, I had a lot of problems. The tank is now running perfectly.

I have now purchased a new 165L tank and want to set it up correctly. I'd hate to lose any of my fishes. BTW they are goldfish. I was wondering if I could use the old filter media in the new tank to help with the cycling process. And if so what should I do?

I set up the new tank last night and added the Aqua Safe and bacteria. I also use a heater.

PLease help?

Thanking you all in advance.

Hello

You can just add your filter to the new tank as long as you have used declorinator on new tank then all should be good then just acclimatize the fish to there new home.

A heater for goldfish? surely they do not need this.

If your now going to keep tropical, have a look at the thread regarding cloning a filter by WD.

Thanks for this.

Can I put all my fishes in at once or maybe 2 a week? I'd like to continue with goldfish as I have grown attached to them. I use a heater as it was recommended when my fish were ill.

I have 9 fishes. 1 black moor, 1 pleco, 2 fancy fish, 2 all gold with white fins (Don't know their names, 2 black, white and gold coloured (again don't know their names) and 1 red and white fish. The last 5 are the same shape in body. they are what (sounds silly) people call goldfish. I can't post pics as I have no camera. Will get one 1 soon.

Also, do I still need to add ammonia?

I use a heater for my coldwater tank, one black moor and 5 white cloud mountain minnows, keeps the temp stable imo.

Its best to add all the fish at the same time as the filter going across also try and add some of the old gravel as that will have some bacteria on it too.

Ive not any idea on the gold fish sorry, ive only kept tropical. You will not need to add any ammonia once the fish are in as they will provide the ammonia from there gills and waste

Well, its wonderful that you've purchased a big 165L/44G tank (that I assume is bigger than your current tank?) Also, its really good that you are seeking help with your filter cloning or fish moving or cycling, whichever we end up working out.

But unfortunately we've got a much larger problem and its unlikely to go away easily. The goldfish experts tell us that goldfish are a very misunderstood fish by society. In direct contrast to the old popular conception of "goldfish bowls" it turns out that these types of the Carp fish really need rather a lot of water volume.

In fact, your 44G would have room for a max of 3 fancy goldfish, or 2 of the standard variety. The guideline with goldfish is as follows:
standard - 30G for the first fish, 10G more volume for each added goldfish
fancy - 20G for the first fish, 10G more volume for each added goldfish
(standard gold fish have a flat two-fin tail, fancies have a triangular 3-fin tail is the rough rule I've been told.)

Back to the problem of the moment though, the fish can all be moved over at once, provided you simply move the entire filter with them and let it run simultaneously with the new filter. The estabished filter will already have colonies to match the bioload of the existing fish. This will quickly give your 9 goldfish access to a greater water volume, which they will of course need, until you can work out what to do.

If the filter can't be moved over to the new tank then I or the other members can help you with the way a filter clone process works. Its just like a fishless cycle except it usually goes faster because you are pre-seeding with large numbers of live bacteria. I believe its correct that I recently did a detailed write-up which maybe somebody can find.
