Soooo, my filter is making odd popping noises and sometimes it's really loud, like someone is setting of a firecracker and muffling it. This started after I cleaned my filter because it was getting clogged with gunk, and now, POP POP POP. Sometimes it's quiet, sometimes it's loud. Should I get a new filter or can I continue using it? It's external filter that hangs off the back.

You might have something in the impeller cavity. I would disassemble and make sure there are no foreign objects (e.g. a bit of gravel). Loud popping noises along with plastic housings containing water are cause for concern.

Do you have model number of the filter?

What sort of filter is it?

Did the motor or cord get wet when you cleaned it?
Most aquarium filters have the electrical components sealed in a plastic resin. If this has been damaged and moisture got into the motor, it could be shorting out. It could also just be a dodgy filter depending on how long you have had it for.

As the others have suggested, give it a clean to make sure there is nothing in the impellor cavity. If it is clean and still makes a noise, make a video so we can hear it and check the warranty for the filter. You might need to swap it for another.

I've had the filter for a ridiculous amount of time. About 8 years it's been running.... There was a break where it wasn't running for two years, and then it ran for another 4 after I set the tank up again. I don't know what the filter is because I've thrown out the box long ago. When the filter does make the noise, I felt the motor to feel if it was vibrating or something. It wasn't vibrating or moving or like getting really hot. None of the cables got wet, nothing got wet, as after I cleaning the filter, I dried the thing off with a rag and a paper towel. I think something might be loose in it, like the magnet, because when I set it next to my tank, my aquascaping scissors were attracted to the magnet and slammed into it pretty hard.

I'm pretty sure I do not have the number

The impellor assembly on most power filters have a rubber grommet on each end of the impellor shaft. The impellor shaft is either steel or ceramic and can wear. If the rubber grommets are worn or the impellor shaft is worn, the impellor might be moving sideways and making the noise.

Maybe take it apart and check it for wear and tear and make sure everything is there.

Okay, I'll do that later today or tomorrow
