Filter issues

I fully cycled my tank but my Marineland Penguin 200 isn't keeping up with my 36 gallon tank. I have junk floating in my tank I have heard that you can run two cartridges in these filters should I try that?

What sort of junk?

My canister filters do not have any sponge in them just sintered glass media ( Biological filtration ) and as such do not actually polish water.

Do you know from what the floating came from? But I think the floating junk does not sink down in the water of the tank and the filter only cleans everything inside of the tank. Not on top thus I would suggest you try and catch everything floating with a net.
