I need some ideas on this. My filter is too strong for the fish I have and if there is not something there to stop them from getting to close, they will get stuck on the intake valve. I do have a half-gallon milk jug covered with another piece of jog on top of it with a hole for the intake, and I put slits all around the jug small enough so water can get in and fish can't. But the problem is, it's ugly. And the staples holding the whole contraption are starting to rust. So if you have a better idea, please let me know.

if its rusting take it out asap as it could contaminate the water..... you could put a piece of sponge or floss inside the strainer or over the outside... :good:

I use panty hose to cover the intake, much less noticable in the tank, just make sure you use a dark colour, black or a dark taupe, white or a light colour will turn brown quickly and look bad.

pics?
you can get a foam pre-filter from just about any LFS

i assume its your 10g youre talking about.
what kind of filter do you have on it? cause it would have to be HUUUUUUGE

Ignore my signature for my tanks, I have yet to change it. I am using an Aqua Clear Power Filter for 70 gallon tanks. I am using it on my 20 gallon. Before you ask, I got it cause it was on sale and I might just use it when I get a larger tank one day. I'm thinking about using a clear plastic container that the plants I got for the tank came in. And my camera just died, so I will have to get it charged.

You can buy a replacement sponge filter insert like I did and just cut a slit in one end. Then just slip it in place over the inlet tube and you are in business.
