I am in the middle of custom building a 50 litre shrimp tank ( 50 cm wide. 45 cm tall. 25 cm deep)
And I have no idea what to use for filtration

I might use the eheim pickup 2010 but it will take up crucial tank space.
Does anyone have any ideas for cheap spade saving filtration.

Thanks, TheAquariumGuy

I'd say that a simple sponge filter might be the best option.

I was thinking of a hamburg matter filter but I don't want to take up too much space. They're like a sponge filter

How about a HOB filter? Won't take up space inside the tank and is relitivately easy for access for maintenance.

Next choice would be, as EA said, a simple sponge filter run with a air pump is very simple and the cheapest option.

There are small canister/external filters available but at a higher cost and I don't know enough about small externals tbh, I know more of the larger ones but assuming they work on the same principal and maintenance as the larger externals etc.

I'd put a 'pre-filter' sponge on the HOB anyway with shrimp... which is why I think a simple sponge filter is the best option really.  Its a small tank, so the sponge doesn't have to be huge.  Plus, the shrimp will actually climb on the sponge - to them it will be a 'part' of the tank, not an addition.

Yer I think I might go with a sponge. What size would you recommend and could I power it with a power head

I wouldn't power it with a powerhead, because its a shrimp tank.  I think just a standard airpump would be sufficient for that.  As for size... a fairly coarse sponge roughly the size of a tennis ball.

I have found a mini external filter for £20 what about using that with a sponge filter as the intake
