Filter Help

I just got a new eheim 2217 canister filter and the directions are pretty confusing and vague. What are the things that look like shut off valves? I got a bigger and a smaller one. Do I need them? Also, I got like a curvy piece of plastic pipe and another curved one that is only like half a piece of pipe. What are they for? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
