Right well basically now I have my goldfish into their proper home in the pond I setup in the back garden, I now want to use that tank for a betta tank :D

One thing though, the filter in that 54 litre tank is completely different to the one im using now, it looks like this:

(image taken from google so it may not be the exact same model but it looks identical)

Inside it is a fairly small rectangle black sponge. Now ive read on here a few times if a sponge is black its for carbon  But this is what came with the filter? Would this not work properly to build up the helpful bacteria you need in a tank then, although why would it come with just this one?

Im just confused because in the tank im using now it has a big rectangle box inside the tank with two compartments, 1 compartment has the pump and heater and the 2nd compartment has the 3 sponges, 1 big blue one, 1 big green one and 1 small black one.

For now ive taken out my black one as its only small anyway so I didnt think it'd make much different to my current water conditions and put the black one out of the other tank into its place to try and clone it for when I want to setup that other tank. Should I have done this aswell or was this a bad move??

I apologise for all the questions but id be greatful if someone could take abit of time and answer them as im quite confused.

Thanks all :good:

Hi Az,

Black sponges are often laced with activated carbon and used for chemical filtration.

Aqua One however, use black as a standard colour for their bio-sponges (normal filter sponges), so i'd suggest that it is probably fine.

You might want to check the box or instructions if you have them, but i have a feeling you won't find any mention of it being a carbon sponge.

Hope that helps mate. :good:

BTT

edit: I just checked Aqua One's website to make sure i'm not giving you wrong info, and they claim it performs biological and mechanical filtration, which suggests theres no carbon involved. :good:
