i've had to removed my male betta from my comunity take as one of the other fishes has shredded his fins, he was completly fine in there for about 2 months.
i felt bad about it so i went out today and bough him a aquastart 320 28 litre tank which he willl have all to himself, the problem is the filter that it comes with is a aquaone internal it's a cheap looking thing and is noisey ,can anyone recomend a filter that would be suitable and quite please :)

A tetra whisper 5-10 gallon filter is very quiet. Like pretty all filters, it'll need to be modified to reduce the water flow coming out so buy some extra foam and wrap part of it around the intake valve so that your betta's fins do not get stuck in it and also stick some on the outtake valve so that the flow is reduced.

One of my tanks has a Nano Sea filter for smaller tanks. That one has a controllabe outflow but is NOISY compared to the Tetra Whisper.

I have a fluval interal next to my bed and it makes too much noise. I have solved this by slightly separating the top and bottom sections. This also cuts down the flow. Might be worth trying if yours is similar construction?

Get a sponge filter. They produce little to no flow which is perfect for a betta, and have no casing which might suck your bettas fins in and shred them further, as some of the slightly stronger internails can do. And sit the airpump on a block of polystyrene to reduce vibration on the stand/table ect. Solved.

agreed with above.
sponge filters are the best filters for bettas. you can easily cheaply and quickly make your own sponge filter. i have them in all my betta tanks(from2-6gal) they work much better than any small commercial filter and are absolutely customizable for your needs. if youd like instructions, PM me. ive made dozens of these and can help you.
cheers

Where can I buy a sponge filter at? Do they sell them at LFS or Petcos? I'm having problems with filter flow on my Tetra 10 Gallon Half Moon Aquarium. The flow is way too powerful for my Betta's liking.

The Elite Mini is nice, very quiet, adjustable flow, small. Or possibly the 1+ (or whatever the newest version is), but that's bigger and probably a bit obtrusive for the tank. I don't think you can fit a HOB on that tank, which is a shame because they're always good.

Edit- Actually, I just looked and for whatever reason the 1+ isn't adjustable. The U1 is though, that's a nice filter, plenty of media capacity and lots of options for output (top, bottom, spraybar).

Yes you should be able to, they are very commonly available filter . You can also get them cheaply on ebay.

I've actually never found a sponge filter at Petco, Petsmart, or any of the 5 fish stores in my area. They have the Small World Penn Plax sponge filters which are no good if you want a properly cycled tank, they don't really have enough sponge for bacteria and are a rip off. I have a couple from Drs Foster & Smith which I'm happy with. (If you're not familiar with that store just google it, it's an online store)
