I have a 60 litre tank, I've had it for a year and ran the Stingray Elite 15 filter no problems, but over the last month the flow decreased, then randomly stopped (no blockages). So I bought another one, but this one makes an irritating irregular clicking sound, the old one never did this and I am convinced something is wrong with it.

Now I would like to choose a different filter this time, in the hope I'll have more luck. It needs to be quiet as it will be in my bedroom. Ideally I would like an adjustable flow but thats not essential. If it doesnt have an adjustable flow I would like to be able to direct the flow where I want it to go, for example at the wall of the tank.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

i run a sponge filter in my 60l, very quiet and cheap as chips (providing you have an air pump). mine is next to my bed :good:

On the other hand, I find pumps very loud and irritating, so would recommend an internal Fluval.

yeah i run a fluval 2plus in my 60 ltr very quiet in my bed room i would recommend the plus series over the U series as they take up less tank space

does it have adjustable flow?

yes theres adjustable flow on the plus series

I run a fluval 105 external filter on my 65l :D

yeah im running an eheim 2215 plus classic on another 65ltr much prefer to have everything outside the tank saves space and it looks better

Thanks, I've googled it but cant see where the water intake is from, is it the slits? is there any danger of getting frog legs or betta fins caught in the filter?

I would but I need something with room for carbon really, my bog wood insists on still giving off tannins. Out of interest what sponge filter do you have? I'm looking for new ones for my hospital tank and a future betta tank, I bought a cheap one from china that does the job, but its noisy (big bubbles) and the suction cap doesnt fit properly so its forever just floating up in the tank.

yes through the slits in the side ive had dwarf frogs in my tank with the fluval no problems ever and ive been running it over 3 years now

My lfs only has the U2, they said its the updated version of the 2plus? Anyone know the advantages of each?

the U series takes up more room in the tank and ive seen a lot of posts by people about them stopping working due to the impellor sticking the plus series is more slim lined you can get them new on ebay for £20

For one of my own tanks about the same size as you are dealing with, I would choose either a nice sized sponge filter and power head arrangement or maybe a simple Rena XP1. Either way, you will need to get the new filter ready by performing a cycle process on it.

I've had great experiences with the U series, specifically the U2. It's pretty well constructed comes with coarse foam, floss/carbon and ceramic inserts, so multiple forms of filtration. Furthermore the design is effective, the only problem with the likes of that filter in a 60 Litre tank is it does take up a lot of space and can look unsightly. Theres not much you can put underneath it, then again it depends how you have it laid out. I have my Fluval U1 normally lying on it's back on the bottom of the floor, the U2 suctioned in the back left corner.

You can get the U2 for around £20 or less on eBay and elsewhere, I got my U1 for £9. If you aren't going to stock heavy you could even consider a U1 though the water will probably have more suspended particles than if you went for the U2.

Edit: Forgot to mention about the impeller issue, as with all filters they need maintaining the only time I have had an issue with the impeller is when I haven't bother cleaning out the impeller for maybe 6 weeks or so and you have the warnings of decreased flow beforehand. A simple clean is all that's needed and it's remarkably easy to take apart to clean.

Pets at Home kindly said they would exchange the filter (wasnt sure if they would as it was just the noise, seemed to be working fine) so I had to get the U2. It is HUGE. But I guess it does the job. It's a lot easier to take apart than the Stingray.

Now I am just a little confused by the filter media included. There are sponges, what I think are carbon sponges and 'biomax'. What is biomax? It wont remove ammonia or anything and starve my bacteria like zeolite, will it? And are the carbon sponges worth using? I need carbon to take out tannins but at the moment I use loose carbon tied up in tights.

As I took the noisy one back I had to change straight away to the new one. At the moment I have 1 of the cartridges that hold the sponge and carbon sponge in a slot, then the other two slots taken out because I have the old sponges in there. I couldnt fit the carbon in as well. Is this the right way to do it? Will it run okay? How long will it be till I can remove a sponge and fill another slot with a new cartridge?

Sorry for all the questions, I havent changed filter before.
