Filter floss

Ive heard people say to get filter floss from an already established tank, what exactly is filter floss, i know the media, the carbon, and the foams but what is the floss?

Is goes at the top of the filter, and is really good at collecting fine particules from the water, you rinse it in old tank water once a week.

oooohhhhh.... so waddaya do? just rip off a chunk, ball it up and stick it in the top of your filter?
