My boyfriend came to clean out his external filter (an Eheim professional 2), which he does every 6 months or so. He took out all the baskets and put them into a bucket, he then took the actual canister and poured the completely black water (mixed with sand and general s**t) into the kitchen sink... He turned the tap on to wash away the dirt when he saw what he thought was a dead fish. It was completely colourless and motionless. He poked it and it started flapping! After panicking like a girl because he doesn't like touching fish he ran to his tank to get a jug of tank water, in the menatinme his mum had put the fish into a drinling glass. The fish was then put into the jug and the following pictures were taken:

The fish is about 1.5 inches long and must have been sucked into the filter as a baby and grown up in the filter!
The fish has now rejoined the main tank.
What a lovely story!

Ok well we didn't notice it was missing because the tank has about 40 randy mbuna in it, who are constantly churning out fry! We just take no notice of the fry as some of them dont make it. Survival of the fittest and all that!
And they are not picky about who they mate with so it could be a hybrid, it looks like a young lombardoi but we will have to wait and see how it tuns out!

Glad the poor guy is alive! Would be good to see more pics of it back in tank.

We would love to get some pics of it in the tank but i think hes just finding his feet (or fins) in such a large body of water after spending the last few months squashed into the filter!

Yea i think it came as quite a shock for my boyfriend when it started flappin in the sink. It would have had to be tiny to fit through the bit on the end of the filter :X

it may have been in there for as long as 6 months
what a survivor

I agree! It's amazing how animals can adapt to their environment and make the best of it! Living with no light, very minimal food, and barely any swiimming room.... must have been like being in a concentration camp.....

Wait, haven't you been watching the news? Don't you know there were no concentration camps?
(I don't mean to use that offensively, just mocking the stupidity of certain people in the media)

i have the same filter, and that fish must of been less than 3mm wide to fit through the gaps, you gotta keep that one, hes a keeper :D
i bet that he isnt used to the big open world of your tank lmao, he probably thinks its paradise :p

Yea he did get chased a bit by the bigger fish at first but soon found a hiding spot! Hes out and about now though so i think he will be ok. I'll try to get some more pics later.

Ya.... when I heard about this I was like wtf? I think those people should be put in a concentration camp themselves for being so stupid.....
