I am having some trouble with my little baby cory catfish, he is really inactive and not eating today, in my 75 gallon so I was going to move him to my smaller tank because there is still a trace of amonia .25ppm in the big tank. I checked the water parameters in the small tank and they were perfect, but I decided to do a small water change and rinse the sponge as well. My filter just died, motor must have went--have had it for several years. :X So I rehoused everybody in the larger tank. My plan was to use the smaller tank for a single fish and the otos, but just hadn't done that yet.

Since you are always supposed to make lemonade when life throws you lemons, I guess I will do that now. Anyone have any good suggestions for a fish to go in there? I know a betta would work, but was wondering if anything else would be okay. Appreciate your suggestions.

If you aren't planning on getting a new filter for the 5 gallon, it would limit your options. As you said, you could keep a betta (or two, with a divider) in there, or even 2-3 african dwarf frogs.

I am planning on getting a filter for the 5 gallon. Sorry, I wasn't clear. :) I am just looking for ideas for a fish that would work in there.

BTW, The catfish is doing okay today, not sure what was up yesterday.

I have another question, the neons from my 5 gallon that I added last night are missing today. I know they needed a larger school, was planning on doing that as soon I felt the 75 gallon was totally stable. If you look at my sig, would any of the other fish have eaten them? I have searched the tank from top to bottom and no sign.

In a filtered 5 gallon, you could keep any of the following...

- livebearers (guppies, mollies, platies, swordtails, endlers)
- white clouds
- danios

If you keep 4 of one of the above fish, you could also keep 2-3 otos, IMO.

Good to hear about the catfish.

Sorry, I don't know about your neons. It is possible that they died and the other fish picked at the remains, but I'm not sure whether the fish you have would actually have eaten them alive.

I'd have a school of cardinal tetras with algae shrimp or an Oto in the 5 Gallon. :)
I like Cutechic's ideas too.
