In the past I have asked in 2 LFS for a culture from an established tank but have been refused. The last shop said they don't do it any more because in the past someone said their fish had died and blamed the culture for the cause.

I went to a fish shop a few days ago and asked if they could supply me with one but they also said they don't do it.

It wasn't such a big problem as I already have 3 existing tanks up and running and I just used the media from one of them but I just asked more out of curiosity to see what their reply would be.

I keep reading on forums where it is suggested to people if they have a friend with an existing tank then ask them but the forums also say ask in the LFS, so does any body know of or have actually done this?

Guess it depends on how well your know the people running your LFS, I got some where I lived before as I knew the people working there well but I've not heard of anyone else managing it from large chainstore type places, usually it's just from independent LFS.

Working for one of the shops in a large chain store.... like i have said elsewhere... after 2-3 tries and each time causing more problems... one time the guys fish all died... he was a regular andgood customer... now he is not... we did replace all his fish and there is every chance he fish died as he already had high ammonia... but he blamed us = cost us money = never do it again. Pretty much covers most of the chain. If it potentially causes a risk... dont do it.

As good an ideaas it is and as much as I/we wanted to help out customers... there are just too many risks involved!
