Filter Cleaning

I had to clean my filter out for the first time last night caus it was so gunky it wasnt flowing strongly enough.

I took the media out of the filter and squeezed out the gunk into water i'd just taken out of the tank.

Was this an ok way to do it? , i wouldnt have killed off all the bacteria i hope

Sounds ok to me, although in future maybe just put some tank water in a bucket and swish the sponges round a little in there, you dont want to lose ALL the gunk

If your at all worried, just test the water for a few days and feed lightly

the gunk is just crap and algae.. you can afford to lose it all. just make sure you wash the sponge in the tank water.. in a bucket, like minx said
