Hi my filter has 3 sections, bio balls, carbon ect when i do a change would i change the bio balls?, as i thought they keep in the good bacteria? cheers rob :good:

Keep the bio balls!!!!! I would keep any sponges you have in there too...at least for a month or so until your new media is colonized.

yeah its been going for about two months now with the sponges would i just wash them in the water i take out the tank ?

Yes. Just swish them to remove large, clogging debris. I have not replaced any media in the 15 months I've been learning this. Keep media until it is literally falling apart. I have a sponge filter I keep in the bottom of one of my Eheims for my hospital tank. When the pad developed a hole I put it in a media bag and back into the canister.

The only media in your filter that should ever need replacing is if you use filter floss. Everything else you keep. I've got filter sponges and ceramic rings that have been in constant use for 15 years or so :)
