Filter Change

I am running a Fluval 304 in my 212 litre tank. I recently bought a second hand Fluval 404 for the tank as the flow rate of the 304 can be reduced quite quickly due to old plant leaves blocking the intake. I intend to put the Biomax media from the 304 into the 404, add another tray of Biomax into the 404 and buy new sponges. As the sponges cannot be transfered from the 304 to 404, there will be a reduction in the friendly bacteria.

Will this cause a spike in the Ammonia and Nitrite during the seeding of bacteria on the new sponges and new media?

why wont the old sponges fit into the new filter baskets? too small? if so, take the old sponge, put it in the basket, and then cut another old sponge to fit in the gaps.
use as much of the old media that you can.even if you just have bits here and there (that wouldnt fit anywhere else) in one basket or another. in a months time, take out the "extras" and the filter bacterial colonies should be fine in all the "new" media.

just a thought. i have a fluval 304 and regularly cut pieces off the sponges to start other filters. i just cut new sponge to fit in place of the pieces i take out. it never skips a beat.
