hi everyone,

i am new to the hobby and i have a 90 litre tank with a fluval 2plus filter. i had a pair of convicts and a pleco, but the convicts bred and had approx 15 babies which are now about an inch in length. both the parents have died but their offspring are fine. how often should i be changing the filter pads with these fish in the tank? could this be why they died?

thanks, richard

Hi Richard and Welcome to TFF! :hi:

Pretty exciting to have new convict babies but pretty sad to lose the parents! I'm sure there'll be some convict experts along perhaps to help with fry recommendations!

Meanwhile, since you've lost the parents and are new to the hobby, turn your attention to our Beginners Resource Center. There's plenty of good reading there and its important to understand the nitrogen cycle and fishless and fish-in cycling in order to understand what may be going on in your tank (sorry if all this is old news for you!)

If you don't have a good liquid test kit yet and don't know about the whole cycling thing then you might also want to read a post I just made for another new member, Karmen, in a nearby thread in the "New to the Hobby" section here.

You should not need to change the filter pads unless they are falling apart as this is where all the beneficial bacteria live.

Regards
Mike
