Filter Carbon? Urgent Help Needed!

hi i need to treat my fish for white spt but on the instructions in sayd to remove my filter carbon. I know it sounds silly but what is this and how do i do it .

not all filters contain it but it is usually a black resin inside a bag, or sometimes a carbon sponge

what type of filter do you have and have you used the original media supplied with it?
