Filter Bacteria Colony

I have been wondering about the amounts of bacteria in filters. I used to have 3 filters running my tank until I bought an external. I moved all filter sponges from the internal filters to the external as soon as I got it. Obviously I have all the beneficial bacteria on the old sponges but will it multiply because it has more space on new media and I will have say double the colony or will it always stay at just the right amount to process the tank waste just spread out over the media. I’m not sure that even makes sense!!! I am basically asking if the same ‘concentrate’ of bacteria will be on each new sponge the same as the old one!

If someone has some details on the process of the bacteria that explains how they work, that would be awesome! Haha!

it wont multiply simply because it has enough space, it will only do so if there is an increased food source. But having the extra room will give it the oppurtunity to do so if required.
