I have an Eheim filter that came with my tank kit (54 litres)   I am growing very frustrated with it, the flow keeps on dropping.   I have cleaned the sponge by giving it a few squeezes in a bucket of tank water several times in the last month. Each time its only ok for a week at best then starts dropping again.  I am worried doing this to often will lose to much of my beneficial bacteria.  Jesus i am waffling !!!

What i want to know is what the best filter on the market for my little tank. I have been looking at this   http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0009YJ4GI/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&psc=1&s=pet-supplies   is it any good or is there something better ?

Also when i buy i new filter how do i go about getting it cycled before dumping the old one.  Can i have two filters running at the same time until there is enough bacteria in it  ?

Whilst away for a few days not long ago the damned filter had stopped all together and i lost 6 shrimp in a matter of days.  Need a solution asap

cheers

i run eheim and cant fault it.

do you run filter floss (very fine media) as this can clog quickly reducing flow?

when starting a new filter you need to get as much filter media as possible from old one and drop it into new and you're ready to go or you can set up another one running i guess but will take a lot longer to catch up

Stingray filters are at best good enough for a lightly stocked tank. Perhaps you may be overstocked or overfeeding if this much performance is lost as fast as you are experiencing its reduction in flow, if you change filters best to take the foams and other media from within your old unit (not carbon) and fit it in your new filter.

Hmmm unsure exaclty what type of foam came with it. Standard i should assume.  I am fairly certain i aint overstocked. Until today i had the following

1 male guppy
7 Pygmy corys
13 shrimp (1 amano, 2 RCS and 10 rilli shrimp)
3 assasin snails
......................................................................................................................................
Today i added 4 ottos

I was thinking that would be the tank now full.  Is this too much do you think ?

I want to add 10 galaxy rasboras but this will not be until after my single guppy has passed into the next life

overfeeding ?  I have been dropping in an algi wafer most days and a little pinch of flakes every second day so fairly sure thats not it.
