So when I filled my 6x2x2 I used a 10gallon bucket adding aquasafe to the bucket each time. This took me hours as you could imagine. Now im ready to set up my 450ltr for my tanganyikan cichlids but I plan to fill the whole tank up using a hose connected to the garden tap. Obviously I don't plan to add any fish to the tank until it is cycled. So my question is : After I have filled the tank up from the hose. Do I need to add aquasafe afterwards or will the chlorine/ heavy metals go away by itself in time? Many thanks

Add enough dechlor, for the whole tank's volume, not just the water you're replacing, before you start refilling.

The reason for adding that much dechlor is that some of it gets bound up by organic compounds, like nitrate, present in the tank.

If you take out the water, add Seachem Prime or whatever other dechlorinator and then fill it up, it should be ok. I've done this and I keep Rummies which aren't the hardiest fish ever.

Just add the dechlorinator after filling it up.

Also, in future for waterchanges - Once you have taken out the amount of water you want to take out, add dechlorinator enough to treat the whole tank, add water via hose, turn filter back on.

Have you heard of Seachem Prime? Best value for money, especially for a large tank like yours.

D'oh! Should refresh page before posting.

Hey thanks for the replys. So add the aquasafe before filling the tank from hose? Or add the aquasafe after filling the tank from hose? I use the pond version of aquasafe 500ml treats 10,000ltrs of water. Might pick up some seachem if I see any about how much of it would I need to treat 450ltr? Thankys

I always add the dechlor before refilling, but other people add it after with no ill effects.

Don't forget that the amount of chlorine in tap water is there to kill loose, stray bacteria, not whole colonies like you have in your filter. There are also many fishkeepers who don't use dechlor at all for changes of 50% or less, although that's not something I would want to try, personally.

You'd need about 10/15mls of Prime for that volume; it's 1ml per 40l

Cheers flutter I will try grab some seachem when I have the spare cash. If not il just use the pond aquasafe. The tank is brand new with a brand new fX5 unfortunately I am only able to add a small bit of media from my existing tank so cycling might take a fair while

Some good info here, I always added declor to buckets as I filled the tank, I always thought that if I put untreated water in the tank I'd kill off all the good bacteria.
