OK, I raise Triops (Brine Shrimp, similar to sea monkeys) as Puffer Food and it's great fun the watch him chase the triops and figure out the best way to kill it! So, I thought I would video it! So here it is! LOL! The Triop he eats in this video is about 2-2.5" Long!

HERE!

That's not a figure 8 puffer, thats a Tetraodon fluviatilis, a Ceylon puffer.

They need bigger tanks than figure8s, and appreciate stronger brackish in the long term.

Great vid though!

I wouldn't say rare, but not terribly common either. I'd like to have one myself but am a little overloaded on tanks right now. :) Make note that it will need a tank of at least 30g when its an adult and will require full saltwater as well for optimal health.

EDIT: Oops, sorry, guess I said that already. :)

Not a clue. No idea how much that is in real money (US$) ;) or how much things cost over there.

fairly common over here in tHe Uk but still a good price. Very dear though if they thought it was a fig 8

noooooooooooooooooooo the triops! *sooob*
lol

i do love puffers tho :good:

LOL! Sorry, I do feel sorry for the triops but it's nature! The Puffer has to eat, i've always got triops stock growing and if I didn't feed the adults to my Puffer they would get eaten by their siblings so i'm doing them a favour (kind of) and giving my Puffer a natural feed at the same time! :D

I feel sorry for the triops too. You know triops have like no nutrition in them? Much less even than brine shrimp, so i hope you dont reguarly feed them as its not really healthy :/ . It would be like me eating plain rice crackers alll the time  . Also its not really nature as triops live in ephedermal pools becasue they evolved no defences against fish over the more than 300 million years they have been around. Only one species of notostraca actually lives with fish and thats Lepidurus arcticus who lives with a dwarf form of the artic charr in some shallow(less than 6 meters)artic lakes.

Ok that went a bit off topic, its a bit sad that i know that much....but its true  . So make sure your not always feeding triops :good: .

He only gets probably 3 a month because it takes ages for me to grow them! The packets I buy only really contain about 3-5 triops a time!! I know their not very nutritional but it's entertaining to watch I think and it's natural in that the food is live and kinda unpredictable so it's better than me just chucking bloodworm etc. into his tank :/

Sorry to track back a little but I think my "F8's" could be ceylon as well - they look like a cross between a figure 8 and a spotted . They do colour up sometimes i.e black stomaches ! so makes them look even less like an 8 . (see what you think below )
Cheers

That does indeed look like a Ceylon puffer to me. I'm not an expert on these Tetraodon puffers, but I've always assumed that figure-8 puffers have eye spots (hence the name -- biocellatus = two little eyes). So if you look at a figure-8, you should see a circular eye spot at the base of the tail, and usually another one below the dorsal fin.

Ceylon puffers don't have these.

Cheers,

Neale
