I just set up my new 75 gallon freshwater tank in December.
Im currently non-planted just because with getting back into the hobby i didnt wanna open that can of worms. Switching over to plants later is a possibility for me though. Im using plastic marineland plants and big lava rocks for decor. My substrate is the smaller fine gravel and i keep the temp at 80 degrees. The tank is 100% cycled, 0 ammonia 0 nitrite and my nitrate hardly ever climbs past 10ppm even after 2 weeks. I stock with small community fish.
Im running 2 filters:
1) fluval 406 (100gal) running mech/biofoam/biomax/biomax/500ml purigen and little polyfil.
2) eheim classic 2215 (100gal) running mech/eheim bio-beads/huge bag of GFO/ lots of polyfil
The questions/problems im having are:
1) My water seems very clear but upclose i always see these super fine dust particles in the water. Im thinking its diatoms in the water?
2) Speaking of diatoms, i have huge problems stopping it from coveting all my decor and 3d background. Im not sure if my water supply has high silicates or is it the big lava rocks feeding silicate into the tank. This problem is making me hate my tank and stopping me from getting another 75.
3) Whats the possibilities with stocking? Am i maxed out already?
My current stock is:
(15) neon tetras
(5) xray pristella tetras
(5) pearl danios
(2) german blue rams (id like to get more)
(4) long fin cherry barbs, they killed 1 :,(
(3) i had 6 ottos but 3 have died, i dont think the cherrys like them
(2) small spotted cories (forget which ones but they stay small)
(2) mystery snails
(?) i bought a dozen ghost shrimp but currently ive only spotted 1 or 2 once in awhile.
