Few Questions About Snakeheads . . .

tri-mar had them in a week or so ago , i was contemplating scarping my setup for them as they looked awsome , but i like my angels to much :)

hi mate

are you talking about Channa Bleheri? Hasve a look at google image and see if this is what you mean by rainbow snakehead. If so they are a dwarf snakehead and do not get too big and are not too aggressive. I wanted some this year but ended up with a very similar lokingtype called Channa Assam whcih has similar requirements for keeping them. a 4 ft tank would be plenty big enough and you could get a few and see if they pair off and I'm not sure but nearly certain you can keep a group of Bleheri without them tearing strips out of each other

Snakeheads are great fish and I got the bug with them last year.

Wildwoods at crews hill has quite a few at the moment which you can get via mail order, they are in really great condition, they are currently about 2-3" in size, tiny little buggers, very cute.

Ive used Wildwoods mail order and its top class :good: I think it was about £12.95 overnight with APC and I highly recommend.

Channa Bleheri (Rainbow Snakehead) is a subtropical species of Snakehead s0 heating the tank is not good for them, they are not particularly aggressive for a Snakehead, they grow to a max of 6" in most aquariums, they will live in groups but if a pair do form expect some very extreme fighting as they attempt to breed. A 4' tank will be plenty big enough for a group of 6-8, as long as there are plenty of caves and hiding places so if violence breaks out they can get away.

I would say these are one of the most colorful Snakehead for a dwarf species.

As you can see by my sig. I have species and quite a few more Snakehead species, I love them.

Cheers, Karl
thanks everyone for your answers and thanks to you karl, yeh karl i meant blehri, so karl could i keep bigger snakeheads in the tank? you said rainbow cichlids are the most colorful out of the dwarf snakeheads so does that mean that theirs more colorful ones which grow bigger that i could keep, id feed my snakehead fish such as guppies or whatever they eat? which fish do they eat?? please tell me about yours, wot they eat, the way they act etc, thanks karl

I have a range of sized Snakeheads from 14" to about 4" in size, they pretty much eat anything I put in the tank, I usually feed mine mussels, prawns, strips if white fish meat like cod, sprats. Pretty much anything meaty and they love it. Also as they get more mature i cut their feeding down to once every 3 days, this seems to be more natural for them and they stay in beautiful condition.
With a four foot tank you could house bigger Snakeheads, the problem being is that most Snakeheads don't really get along when they are adult and there is a lot of fighting. All of my Snakeheads are in separate species tanks, and in the case of the medium size ones 10"+ they are in there own tanks altogether.
There are much bigger Snakeheads out there that can grow potentially up to 3' long, but i have none of these.
Personally i think the prettiest Snakehead is the "Channa Aurantimaculata" my friend has one that is 16" these are absolutely stunning fish, If I ever have room again i will be getting some of these.
All species have different personalities so it is difficult to tell you what they are all like, just remember that these are predators so be careful if you give them tank mates.

As stated earlier I would not recommend feeding any fish live feeder fish, because of the risk of introducing something nasty into your tank.

Cheers, Karl.
