I have had mine for over a year....he's HUGE and not at all shy, and YES he EATS PLANTS I've even seen him with a firm mouth grip on an Anubias ....just tuggin' away. I can't keep anything but Jave Ferns, Anubias and Hornwort in there, even though he has a permanent salad bar filled with Duckweed that he eats constantly.

He was VERY aggressive with my Angelfish when they spawned, taking the attacks of both parents, and eventually running them off so he could eat the eggs. Other then that, I don't find him aggressive, really....he was just in the mood for cavier I guess

well, my plants should be fine, i've decided not to get the festivums, i'm going with apistogramma cacatuoides instead.
