Hi all!

Just a quick one really. Having just done the full monty on the substrate in my tank, ie heater cable laterite and so on, is it ok for me to add ferrotabs to the root system of each of the larger plants, until they 'push' their roots down again?

I only ask because whilst I'm adding liquid ferts aswell, I'm not doing any checks on the tank levels as fars as iron and all the other P's. I will be getting a kit, but until then should I hold off on the tabs, or hold off on the liquid ferts?

Thanks in advance,

sub.

when you say liquid fert what exactly is it, a general fert or EI ferts.

you wont need root tabs yet, laterite does the same job, use them in 3 months or so when the initial iron load in the laterite has been used up a little. right now if you add them you'll have an iron over dose = algae problems.

if the liquid fert is high in iron i would steer well clear. you will still need to add the other trace ferts though. kent botanic "grow" is a good one it has iron but not a lot.

if you have high light you may want to go the whole hog with EI etc..

Hmm,

Well, I'm only on 2 WPG (96W over 48 US Gallons) at the moment. I'm using Tetra Plantamin cos it was cheap! Any advice gladly received. I'll try to find some Kent products online, any idea on the cost?

Thanks,

sub.42, I'd recommend using the EI method.

Dry ferts are very cheap and will last you a long time. You'll probably only need KNO3, KH2PO4 and CSM+B if your water is medium soft or harder. Check out zig's EI pinned thread and ask any furthur questions on here.

The Kent products will do the same job, just cost you a hell of a lot more money.

So you think that with only 2WPG that I will be ok using EI? I'm going out this afternoon to find the relative test kit/s. Any recommendations?

Thanks,
