Is a ten gallon tank too small for six females? I'm really wanting a female tank, but I've read that 20 gallons is best. Could I get away with a ten gallon if there is lots of plants and hiding places?

You can definately get away with a 10 gallon for 6 females. Just provide a lot of hiding places.

10 gallon for six is perfectly fine. :)

Lots of live plants and caves would be good to add, or even silk plants if you don't want to play with live plants. Some females get along better than others, so you may need more or less hiding places depending on how aggressive your girls are.

I have 6 girlies in my planted 10g tank.
It is (well, was now) working just fine.
I recently had to pull some of them out for treatment of columnaris, and they're currently in the 'readjusting' period - we have several tail chunks and body hunks missing, but all in all I think they really love each other deep down and are glad to be back together.

I have a cave, a piece of fake driftwood with lots of holes and several plants to hide in/behind in mine. The plants are anacharis, cabomba, moneywort, java moss, and mondo grass (which I learned AFTER I set up my tank is a big no-no, but it's actually doing quite well - go figure). I also have some beach pebbles and some slate set up against the back for them to hide behind too.

I think that's my favorite tank :)
