hi all,

just noticed one of my female swordtails lips are MISSING!!! her mouth is just a whole, like she has had it cut off (it's completely flat to her face), she is still feeding well though??

any ideas please?

125litre, there are danios, other swordtails, dwarf gouramis, rams, bristlenose pleco and apple snails in tank. I change 20% water everyweek without fail, stats are fine.

thanks

Dave

P.S. my "hospital" tank currently contains Guppy fry!!

Has she always had this as it could be a birth abnormality? If not I'd think it might be a fungal infection like rot and I'd start treating right away.

how long have you had them? Has anything changed recently? I had a nasty run of mouth rot that wiped out my swordtails a month back, and it didn't look like that.

That looks bad - it doesn't look like a birth abnormality to me but it could be an injury of some sort. It could also be the result of mouth rot but there's no sign of any bacterial growth at the moment from what I can see. How long has she had this?

hi, she's been in tank about 3 weeks, never noticed this before at all. there seems to be white "stringy wool" flapping in and out of her mouth as she is breathing.

I have Melafix and Primafix?

will my apple snails and pleco be ok with these?

is it to late for her? sounds aweful, but if there no hope for her, I would not want her infecting the rest!

thanks

Dave

Its columnaris and nothing to do with fungus. You need to treat asap as this can wipe out a tank in days. Lower the temperature and use a bacterial med. I would isolate her anyway.

Do you have any other tanks as it can spread through using equipment from tank to tank.

Hi
Other tank has fry!!

l have started with Melafix!!

ls it likely for the Mouth to grow back?

Temp is an issue at the moment, its VERY hot here + I have fans blowing on tanks + heaters not on!!

I have not put anything in this tank from any others.

anything else I should consider? Thanks

Dave

melafix isnt strong enough to deal with this. You need to isolate this fish before it spreads. Im sorry but I dont see any way back for this fish. Maybe putting ice cubes in a bag and floating might help.

Is it best to euthanase(spelling) this fish? + treat tank anyway?

What med? I'm in uk

Thanks

Dave

myxazin is a broad range bacteriacide so you could try that or the one interpet make but ive always used waterlife meds.
If it was my fish and i didnt have a quarantine tank then yes i would use clove oil to euthenise.

i think it'd best even if she recovers she'll prob be prone to other things, and have no mouth :/

should i treat the rest of the tank then?

now i need to find clove oil at 17:58 ??

It columnaris mouth rot, and once this happens sadly the fish never makes it, even antibiotics as it usally to late, some of the fish look like they have white scales, any fluffy bits or white patches on the fish.

As the poor fishey really stood no chance (there was a lot of face missing, and watching her eat, she could only suck in small bits, not nibble or anything) I took decision to euthanise her :/ using clove oil (managed to get some).

looking at her closely, she was in a bad way and as I said, there was a LOT missing from her face.

I have treated the tank with Mekafix anyway, as this is all I have, should I continue with this?

many thanks

dave

R.I.P. I would do a water change for a few days, good luck.
