ive googled with no joy, if a female is displaying breeding stripes but not really as plump as you would expect, does this mean she actually does have eggs? my bubblenest is ready shes got her vertical stripes, flirting is apparent, theyve been at it for about 5 hours now with about 4 wraps but no eggs are falling.

They don't have to be chubbysuns to have eggs, and if it is her first time she will be a bit bunged up, I've betta's in the breeding tank for hours before they finally get it right and she starts to release eggs.

If there is no real aggression then leave them together overnight and see if they are OK in the morning.

thankyou i thought i wasnt ever gunna get a response
they are showing no aggression at all, placid as if on their own, no nipping, a little chasing and the only contact have been the wraps, was quite surprised really. yep its her first time

They can get their breeding stripes without being as full of eggs as they should be, but it sounds like your females does. If it's her first time like you said, that's fine. Just watch them and hope you get some eggs. If she looks like she's getting beat up or just plain pooped out and still hasn't released any eggs, you might want to take her out an continue conditioning, but I don't think that will be an issue. Will you post with what happens? I'm curious:p

i gave up after almost 9 hours and seperated them again, will try in a couple more days or maybe tomorrow if ive got the time to watch them. not comfortable with leaving her with him as hes getting aggitated b/c she wont give it

Can you see a white tip to the ovipositer?
This is a sign the the eggs are ready.

I've always left the female in with the male as long as the tank was large enough, i used 24"x12"x12" and if the male was a good one, he would spend most of his time builind and tending to the nest, and course chase the females but never a problem.

Even if you miss the spawning, you soon notice the eggs in the nest.
I always hade some java moss in the breeding thank for two reasons; cover for the female befor and after breeding, and it contains tiny food's which will help the at the first feeding stage of the fry.

helter you been looking hrough my windows mate?  got the exact same size tank, with 6" of water, java moss and some other crappy plants which she hides in, hes built his nest at the back left hand corner of the tank under a polstyrene tunnel i made for him, will leave them to it today, she's bound to do it today as yes she has her white spot. i aint to hot on spawning as never done it before but sure am ready for it, been waiting months to be in a position to house the fry once they are ready to outgrow etc.....

he's a violet blue and red with an orange cap on his head (Delta) and shes a CT multi got them both from, wait for it............................................... pets at home in christchurch would you believe it. they had a shipment in of deltas and this one CT female and a selection of VT.

Dam u saw me!!!! never make a stalker will I.

Thats exactly how i did it :)
I've had mine take 10 days before they breed, and I've had the luck of having a male that was just not intrested as well!!!

But sure your's will be fine, also quickly, have you got the surface open to the room, or is it covered and light by anything?

 that was my next question, its covered with a hood and light and there is quite a lot of condensation building up on the tank inside, have read that they perfer to have the tank covered to keep a steady temp for the fry but also ive read that its best to have it uncovered to allow a good circulation of air on the water surface but my hood does supply the air needed. torn between which way to have it. what would you reckon.
How about re conditioning your female and try it again after few days or so.
will defo do that if nothing happens today :good: she is alot larger this morning that yesturday and i havent fed them today at all

Honestly I don't condition females coz it's an extra job for me. what I do is to pick the most eggy female from the pond and show her to the male and if they show interest then it's breeding time after a day.

funny you mentioned that b/c i was told to do exactly the same thing by a good friend who had successfully spawned this way, which i did but i did let them settle in first, had a tank with a divider in it, male on one side and 2 females on the other side and picked the female who showed breeding stripes and the white dot, removed the other female and then introduced the two for breeding, THM he building like crazy and shes just swimming around like shes on a holiday, read so much over the past months on members experiences with spawning, lucky that they are both so placid, she did try to help him slightly with building but she gave up after a few minutes and just went to the base of the tank to watch him do it himself.

Yeah coz I'm a lazy bastard I tried breeding conditioned females and the one's that I picked up from the pond and they are just the same lol
