Hey guys,

I lost my male platy this week and I've now noticed that the female he'd paired up with has taken herself off into isolation. She's just hanging around by the filter. She is eating and the other fish keep going up to her but she refuses to come out, just darts forward to chase them off then resumes her position.

I don't think she's sick, I think she may be pregnant but I'm not certain of that yet. My question would be do I go get her another male? I know fish don't think like us humans but she really seems to be missing him.

I have 14 of their babies in my smaller tank, this is why I'm unsure of what to do. There will undoubtedly be a male among them but it will be a long time until mum and babies can be re-introduced (possibly a couple of months maybe) and is she likely to pair up with one of her own offspring anyway?

I know this seems like a silly question but I am really unsure of what to do right now so thought I'd ask everyone here

Cheers guys
Akasha

are you sure she isnt sick? :) xx
maybe she is just missing her male friend :) xx fish have feelings too :) xxx idk whether she would pair with her offspring, but maybe she is just lonly? try geting her some friends? xx

Yeah, try getting another female. That way eventually the babies will stop but hopefully she'll be happier.

But, yeah - what did your male die of? It is possible whatever the cause was, she has it too.

the male died of dropsy sadly. There are other platies in there with her but the male was the one she was always with. They paired up right away and she was the only one that had his babies - he never bothered with my female wag tail or two female tuxedo. It was odd really.

Anyway I've been out (shopping new thread coming up - exciting news) all day. I've just switched on their light and given them a block of tubiflex and she's coming out and has stuffed her face. No way she's sick, I think she's just lonely without her man :(

Had a look for another boy for her today but none as pretty as my old one so left it. I'll see what my other lfs has in the new year

With all those babies, you'll have plenty more males soon enough.

They don't 'pair up', so don't worry about her missing him. She'll more likely enjoy the peace!

this is the thing ... she's not getting any peace poor love ... she's got the attention of my male guppies again! It stopped when the male platy was there now he's gone she's been chased round. Maybe that's why she's been hiding ...

Maybe. She'll manage! They'll all have more room soon enough.
