ive had some female platies since november, and iv already lost one mature female when she just became really thin and stopped eating, and one of the others is doing the same, i always make sure that my tank gets enough food

i was just wondering if platies nowadays are so inbred that they dont live long? can anyone else help out? please

Most livebearers are fairly weak now and don't live very long. Most around 1-2 years depending on how they are kept. Saying that I had a guppy which was 4 years old!

have you tried de-worming your fish? Look for something called Flubendazole or Flubenol and treat your tank with that. See how they do then.
If fish continue to die then take one of the sick fish to s fish vet and have it autopsied.

i cant really take it to a vet cos england probably has 5 vets who kno anyfin abt fish lol
none of the other fish are having problems, just the platy females

What is the pH and water hardness in your tank MattBond? Platies, like most common livebearers do great in my tanks that have liquid rock for water with a pH of well over 7.5.

I have had similar problems with my platies and guppies. I personally think it's due to bad breeding, because all the females I've bred myself haven't had this problem. It could also be due to stress from being reintroduced to the community tank too soon after giving birth and having the males harass her (if you have any). Maybe try adding some vegetables to their diet.
