Hi, i have had my tank set up for about 3 monthes now and since iv had it iv had no problems untill 3 weeks ago when my female gourami started becoming lethargic and not eating, all it seems to do is sit on the bottom of the tank and do nothing. I have a male gourami which is absolutely fine and swimming around brilliantly and i have 4 neon tetras which are as lively as ever. I am really concerned for the poor gourami as i think it might have a bacterial infection, but it is showing no signs of sores or abbrasions on its body. As i am new to keeping fish i have no idea what to do or if there are any treatments, i would appreciate all the help.

Thanks

is it a dwarf gourami or a normal (blue, gold or two spot) gourami?

the most common problem with gouramis is internal bacterial infections but they are hard to treat. An internal antibacterial treatment might help but if the fish has stopped eating there probably isn't much hope.

its a dwarf gourami! yes its stopped eating a while ago now, so is it just a matter of time then?

if the fish has stopped eating then isolate it in a bucket of tank water. Alternatively put the fish into a small container of water and pop it in the freezer. Leave it there until frozen then bury the body in the garden.

Make sure you wash your hands with soapy water after handling the gourami. If the fish has an internal bacterial infection it could infect any open wounds on your hands. Washing with soapy water should prevent this.
