My cousin just bought me a female betta fish and i have another one and i was thinking of putting them in the same tank so they can be friends lol and was wondering if they would fight each other, there about the same size...

Hi, as many here will tell you, two females can't go together. I think you need at least 5? Might want to wait for the exact number, but I know two can't be put together.

The reason is one will continually attack the other, and eventually kill her, there has to be a pecking order.

ooo ok, but i put them in the sink to see and the new one kept chasing the other fish around ...

In the sink? :p Your sink is probably about as dirty as your toilet. Would you put fish in a toilet?

Get a bucket next time... :p

i didnt put it in long, how else do u do a water change ?

put them in a bucket, or a tub, something clean! i use those "really useful" boxes you get from stationary shops (in the UK anyway)

I would be afraid that soap could be in the sink. Also, you could lose your betta if the drain was accidentally opened. I use plastic cups when I do water changes. It's easy to float the cups in the tank to acclimate the betta. :D

im scared that my fish withh go down the sink too because i sumtimes have to let the water down since there is so much but im pretty careful... i rinse the sink before i put it in though.. i put my fish in a cup before and he jumped out and i didnt kno once so im kind of scared of that.... but thats not cool my fish is so lonely i wanted her to have a friend.... im never gonna have 5 females the shop are alwayz out

It is possible to keep two females together in a tank as long as you have plenty of places for them to hide and create their own territory! But make sure you have a spare tank ready for if anything does go wrong! Even five females in a tank will get nipped mine often look like they've scrapping but it doesnt worry me as it tends to be when they're hormonal. The reason people say you should keep five or more in a sorority is so that one doesnt get excessively picked on and the aggression is more or less evenly distributed!

Not true actually I've been known to put my fish in the sink if I had them in containers! It's much easier to clean a container if you empty it of the fish then you can get rid of any slime or algae build up that has formed! I've even lost a rasbora down the plug hole once because it jumped out of the net before I could put it in a cup and stupid me had pulled the plug to let water out of sink! And before you say anything reason I had the rasbora in the sink was because it got sucked into my bottle that I was using when doing a water change and instead of emptying bottle back in tank I decided it would be quicker and easier to use the sink so it is possible and probable that people use their sinks!

Here's a link to the rasbora thread http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=124345&hl=

I'm not tyring to be rude or anything if I come across that way I'm just saying it does happen thats all

But aren't there detergents and soaps in the sink? I mean, even cleaning out the soap, there still is the residue, and most people use that Mr Clean cleaner, or Vim or something of that sort, i don't think that ever really washes away. Just as they say you souldn't use soaps and detergents to clean your tank, i would think it woul dbe similar to a sink.

There probably are some traces of soap etc in the sink but I doubt the quantities in there would harm the fish if it was only in there for a couple of minutes! I could be wrong though! All I know is apart from the escaping rasbora the rest of my fish have been fine in the sink for short periods!

Ive put bettas in the sink while changing water...does that make me fake ?? idiot

I will add though, that the sink is well scrubbed out beforehand.

I still maintain that fish do not belong in the sink... :/ I'm not saying it doesn't happen or people don't do it - I'm saying they shouldn't...

As I said, would you put your fish in the toilet?
