I was wondering if 1 female betta can be kept in a community tank. I know if itis a female betta only tank they need to be kept in larger groups, but if it is the only one would it be okay?

Thanks in advance...

Yes, that should be fine. I have had a female betta in a community tank (with platys, mollies, harlequins and at one point a red tailed black shark) - for a year with no problems at all. Males, on the other hand, are a different story! Wouldn't keep a male in a community tank.

So, yes, providing you get a female that definitely is a female and not a male in disguise LOL :hyper: (which can happen)

i would say it depends on the tank mates and the personality and temperment of the individual betta

I agree with lilfishie it really does depend on the fish and the tank mates. She will more than likely be ok but it would be a case of keeping a close eye on her to make sure she settles in ok without harm

As for tank mates, I have:

bristlenose
cories
mollies
angel
neons
chinese algae eater (getting rid of him)
+ 3 other smallish unknown fish

So will it be okay???

BTW the neons aren't very nippy. They will occasionally nip other neons, but are not brave enough to try it on any of the other fish. And they angel very rarely even chases the neons.

The only one from that list I would be wary of is the Angel fish. They can be fin-nippers, too - my LFS advised me not to put Angel fish in my community tank because they can be troublesome bullies. Maybe if you only have one they are a bit quieter, I don't know...

Only thing you can do is to keep a watchful eye on them when you add the betta. If you see the angel fish picking on your betta (or your betta flaring a lot) then it's best to remove one of them and rehome (or return it to your LFS if they allow it).

Okay thanks,
I will have a look around for a female betta and if I find one that I like I will get it.

BTW I find it very hard to recognise the tale type of female betta's. Is there any easy way of telling the tail type (for someone who is kind of new to learning tail types, especially females)?

Ally - I just did a quick search to see if there were any old posts with photos to show you - I found this particular thread, might be useful:

When I find the right betta I'll try my best to ID it before I buy it. I really like Halfmoons. Does anyone know the average LFS prices for Halfmoons or any other tail types? (Australian Dollars if possible even if it is just an estimate)
