Female Betta And Platties

My sorority are fine with my female platties, in fact, the platties follow them around (think thee think they are bettas  ).

I find that platties tend to keep out the bettas way and don't bother them.

Excellent.

We aquired 3 fry from the lfs yesterday; they are currently in my boyfriends tank at the minute with his danio fry.

I was just wondering if I could mix them when they got bigger :). I'd imagine they'd be fine now but being so small I'd hate to risk it. They are sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo cute.

Not sure if the platties are male or female yet (too small to tell); two are orange and one is silver. They are ADORABLE!

Apparently people use bettas as 'fry control' for guppy fry but they don't do a good enough job keeping the fry down to small levels

2 of my females are ready to drop their fry within the next week, kinda excited

okies but keep in mind that all it takes is for the female to 'mate' once with a male and she can keep having fry up to 6 months after :good:

hi, I'm not sure platties in with bettas, is a good idea, they are notorious for fin nipping, and can do quite a lot of damage. i just rehomed the fry my female had, and they became sex defined at approx 4 months old. around an inch in length.
you may need to think of an alternative plan, as my platies were devious nippers, and i lost a few other fish to them as they pestered them to death, cheers

i can see them being fin nippers in a large group but 2 or 3 platties in with a sorority should be ok, as long as there is space and that the tank is planted.

I've never had an issue with my platties and my sorority is kind of a rough 'girls together' (well only between themselves).

I would say try it, your sorority seems to be going well and is peaceful, worth a try :good:

Oh it's definately peaceful. They've been a little stressed since going into the bigger tank (need more plants); however they've been fine otherwise.

I can probably count the amount of nipped fins in the whole tank on one hand since I've had them. TBH I was very lucky with my first 4 and then I learnt a lot and picked 2 shy girls, although one seems REALLY shy so she might have to be moved to be alone; she is really sociable but very shy. Unless I get a divider for her. But I'm waiting a few weeks to decide.

I'm still not 100% sure whether to put them in there or not. My boyfriend has a seriously understocked 20 gallon (at least) tank so they might be better in there (with danios). I want to keep an eye out to see if they are male or female (and try to separate if possible). He also has my old 9 gallon tank which they'd be fine in as well.

don't worry about her being shy, put a few more plants in and she should be ok x

She was shy in the tank when I bought her; she came out of her shell when I had her in the smaller tank but she isn't happy in this one. I'm just hoping she comes out of her shell again; I definately need more plants; just need to decide what to get now.

how many hiding places do you currently have? maybe you can buy a roof slate, break it up and make a cave, i did that for my apistos but my bettas seem to enjoy it.

I have two ornaments in there with hiding spaces and then plants.

I only had one ornament in the other tank and the back was heavily planted. I'll have to get more plants for them. Now I have "more plants" however still not enough.

I should get around to posting pictures of the girls as well :)

they love coconut caves/shells too, hide away in there, i find my male betta tends to muller in there with the khulis. Think it's his 'time-out' from the girls

I also have one of those teracotta pot things that the plants from pets at home come in...one of the girls likes hiding out in there as well lol.

I half fancy a coconut shell and I suppose I'd just have to eat it too; I could actually try and get one in the back; I might do that actually with some moss on top :)
