I just came from the LFS and was wowed by their tank full of female bettas. They were larger than any I've seen before and the colours.... I am going to do the same thing with my 10 gallon.

Question about a possible tank mate. The females did seem too aggressive to have my platys or guppies in the same tank with. The ram is another fish I would really like to get, but he seems too aggressive for the platys & guppies also. Would the ram and female bettas make good tank mates, or should I just forget about the ram and go all betta? That way the other tank could house all the more passive fish.

tbh I think 10gallons is too small for a pair of rams

and not a good idea with a betta either

Yes 10 Gal is too small for a sorority of bettas and way to small for Rams. I have 6 female bettas in a 36 Gal tank. The other tank mates are 2 Balloon Rams, clown pleoc, bristle nose pleco, 7 red tail rasboras, 1 oto ( I know they need friends but all of his died and I am surprised he is still kicking it.)

This set up works for my fish. The Rams will chase the piggy bettas when they come near the rams food but besides that no problems. When keeping a sorority of bettas you need to have LOTS of hide outs and room, They do set up a pecking order and each have their own little territories.

Get a 30 Gal tank if you want to keep a sorority or bettas with other fish. Or a 20 Gal for just the bettas and maybe a few cory cats or neons.

Having kept both I wouldnt mix them. Rams are stunning fish but they will outsize bettas once fully grown and I know they are community cichlids but they are after all in that family and can get touchy, I have given more than one ram up to tail biting in the past.

I have 5 female Bettas in a 10 gal. and it's fine, so far. I wouldn't add Rams to the mix, even if the tank were bigger...

Ok, so no rams. I don't want tail biting. I was thinking of 3 of the female bettas. One red, royal blue, and teal. I was also thinking of adding one or two of the smaller females. This would put me dangerously close to the inch per gallon rule. Maybe just the 3 females would be ok though, and a snail. I do love watching them do their dives off the top of the glass and catch on to the plants below.

again, imo i dont think that will work, 3 bettas isnt a good number to spread out the bullying, id say 4 is a better number, and will work in a 10gallon

some people will argue that 10gallons isnt enough, but i had 4 in a 7gallon, and they were fine, I planted it well, lots of hiding spaces, and had an external filter on the tank, so that freed up some room, remember though that a 10gallon with 4 female bettas will need regular water changes, I used to do my 7gallon 2 times per week of 50%

Hope this helps :good:

That does help, because I really wanted more than 3 :hyper: I was afraid that too many might overload the tank. It is a cycled tank, even though they are air breathers, they do spend time near the bottom. I do have a filter and lots of plants. I can't wait until the store opens. (3 more hours)

Should I test the water like I do for other tropical fish I have and do water changes accordingly?

10gallon with 4 female bettas will require 3 changes per week of about 25%

It will need to be heavily planted, loadsa hiding spaces too

This is how mine used to look

Yes make sure that the tank has finished cycling? Have you cycled it?

Wow! I love your tank. :hyper: Bit jealous too. I've got the fish, they are climatizing right now. Yes tank is cycled. Will change water like you said. Really love your tank!!

Now I want to go shopping again any try to get that look. Thanks for the advice. Once I get something to upload photos, I will show you how things turned out.

If you had a 30 Gal tank or larger you could totally keep Rams with Bettas. These 2 fish don't bother each other at all. They don't even notice one and other. A 36 Gal with 5 females and 2 balloon ram. They don't touch each other. The females only care about the other females around and the Rams are the same way. Only time the Rams mind the bettas is when it is feeding time. Even then all they do is chase them away from the food. They never take chunks out. It's all show.

What you seem to be forgetting is that every fish is different, there is no way you can "totally" keep them together

Rams get very territorial when breeding, and can be very territorial in general. Please note I said "can" not saying this is a for sure thing

From experience both breeds are territorial, and mixing them is asking for trouble

Whats the point in risking fish getting attacked?
