can you expect an accurate temp in the tank? 175 litres

(the temp in the room is always below the tank temp)

i have now trying my third heater in 2 weeks.

when testing the latest heater outside the tank (in a bin of water) there is about a 1 degree centigrade up on the setting.

in the tank, the temp seems to go to three degrees above setting - i assume the lights are affecting it
( 2 * 30w ).

providing the temp is between 23 and 27 centigrade does it matter?

how else can i control the heat correctly?

are these variations the norm?

Its normal for the temp to be lower in the house than in the tank, mine is.

Hi-make sure the heater is adequate for the size of the tank.... If it cant cope it will stay on too long and shorten its life-just a thought

Check the heater the right watt for your tank.
Light do alter temp abit bit only a degree at the most.

Im a bit confused, are you sure its nothing to do with the heaters thermostat??? It'll heat up for a while and then stop, then start again when the temperature drops

Most of the time this summer my tank has been at 27 and drops a degree at night-even so the heater still pops on for a minute or so now and then and thats set at 24. My tank is 107 litres and the smaller the tank the greater the fluctuation so really you shouldnt be getting a problem

thanks for all the prompt help.

i had an elite heater that was 200w that i set to a temp of 22 centigrade and it would climb up to 28 centigrade overnight. (House heating off)

i am trying today a Hydor 200 w heater which so far in the bin test is showing only 1 degree above setting.

it says on the packing that it is suitable for tanks up to 200 litres or 40 gallons - mine is 175 litres.

i'm going to put this heater into the tank tomorrow and test the readings.

i assume that ive got the correct heater. ive got three different thermometers checking the temp. the digital seems to be the most accurate.

just a thought - does the power of the water flow affect the temp? ive a Fluval 305 which is suitable for tanks up to 300 litres.

I would stick with that one then, when you say 1 degree above setting that should be with the lights on in the tank.

Don't go by the temperature readings on the heaters, they're not acurate and are just a rough guide. Go by what the thermometers are saying.

thanks Voo - i realise now that there are too many variables in determining the temp in the tank. as you say the best idea is to monitor the temp and adjust heater accordingly. i was a bit too naive to think that the heater on its own would maintain a constant temp.

many thanks to everyone for help :)
