My Dad moved to a nursing home, and I now regularly travel from my home to his (1.5 hours drive one way) and stay a few days, as I have work done to fix it up, and I also am clearing it out, posting stuff on craigslist and selling it.  I go up for 3 nights at a time, usually each week or every other week.  I take the dogs with me.  The cats remain at home, I can easily set them up for a few days with no problems.  (I think the cats enjoy having the house to themselves for a bit!)

I've had the small tank, with tetras, for years.  I'd feed before I leave and when I return, and I put in a vacation feeder for while I'm gone.  Fine, no issues.

Now I have the 50 gallon.  Currently, I have 10 rummy nose / fire head tetras in there.  (H. bleheri).  I am feeding them either dried blood worms, or I am crushing up pellets (since they have a small mouth).  How do I feed them while I am gone?

I plan to add lamb chop rasboras, and three stripe corys  (Corydoras trilineatus).  Those are on order with my local lfs, due to arrive in 10 to 14 days.  How will I manage feeding them when I travel?

Oh, and I've added one horned nerite snail in the small tank.  I think I can just leave an algae wafer for that, correct?

Ideas, suggestions, info please!

Feed them daily when you are home.  Feed them the day you leave and the day you return.  I regularly fast my tanks.  I have a tank at school with tetras, and they get fasted 2 days every week (Saturday and Sunday).

I think the fasting idea is a good one.  I have had some bad luck in the past with vacation feeders.

I spent about $20Aus on a battery powered feeder, you can set the number of feeds per day and the time of the feed, and even the amount of feed (1 or 2 doses, or more). I'd assume there's something on beat that will be local for you.

I once loaded it with feed and set it for twice a day single feed, after a fortnight away it was all but empty on return. So I reckon a month is possible. Pellets, because flakes don't work well.

Previously I've gone for the holiday blocks (but not the white pyramid ones that leave white chalk on everything) and some elodea for if the fish get desperate. Never lost a fish while I was away.
