i have a 125g tank with 3x large red fined cigar sharks, 2 severums, 1 upside down catfish, 1 18" plec.
i know there is a rule for feeding which is only feed what the fish will eat in 5mins but when i feed my fish they can take hours to eat there food.
i feed the severums earth worms as thats all i can get them to eat, there not to bad, they will have 2 each twice a day no problem, the red fined cigar sharks will eat lettice and peas no problem but the severums wont go near it lol, so that leaves the pleco and the upside down catfish, i use sinking pellets for the upside down catfish and he will take up to an hour or so to eat those pellets, so there lying around on the bottom for ages, as for the pleco he always use to eat floating pellets and cucumber, thats all i could get him 2 eat but lately i have put the pellets on the top and they would have 2 stay floating around for ages and ages before he starts to eat them but he does eat them all in the end,he isnt interested in the cucumber, something doesnt seem right, the pleco and upside down catfish would eat there food within 5 mins, but not now, the pleco seems like he is getting skinny, i can start to see the bones in his body and that now so im just a little worried.
so i cant stick to the 5 min rule for feeding anymore, does anyone have any ideas what i could try to get my fish feeding better again?
2nd question is that this could be linked with why my fish are not eating right.
i bought the tank 2nd hand and has been running 2 years now, i have had it about 2 months, since i got it set up and i cant get my ammonia below 2, nitrite 2, nitrate 40, i have been doing 50-75% water changes every 2 days and its not making any difference at all, the filters i am using at the moment are the eheim 2213 external filter and the fluval 303 external filter along with a 5000 powerhead, i have been cleaning the external filters as soon as i see the water outlet get slower which is about a week or so, i am going to be upgrading my filters this week, which both put together will do a 1000 litre tank, could my filters i am running now be the problem that i cant get my ammonia down? but it seems strange that the ammonia dont go down after a water change
does any one have any ideas what i can do about both my problems?
many thanks
kris
