Feeding Mollies

I added two Mollies to my tank yesterday, and they don't seem to be eating the flakes I put into the tank at all. One has taken to eating stuff from the casing of the filter and the other is eating some algae from a rock.

They seem fine and they are going to bathroom plenty so I guess they are eating enough, but it seems wierd they would rather eat algae than the flakes. They don't come to the surface to get the flakes at all, and they don't seem to care if a bit sinks and floats past them.

Is this normal Molly practice, are they getting used to their new tank, or should I be worried?

Not sure if it's normal but my molly's eat anything they see. They eat all of their flake food and when they're not being fed they're always getting algae of rocks and picking bits of food up off the gravel. I wouldn't worry too much about them not feeding from the flakes - they maybe just settling in and if they seem healthy enough they'll probably be ok!

Actually, Kev, it's normal. Mollies are big algea eaters and some even prefer it to flake food. Try getting them some Spiralina Flake or Algea tablets (the kind you can stick to the side of the tank), and you may see them eating that? Otherwise, if like you said, they are poopin' and doing their thing, they are fine

Thanks for the comments guys, sadly one of the mollies was found dead belly up on the bottom this morning.

But I've replaced him with two more as the other one seemed fine. They seem very happy since I added them, they are mostly swimming around in a trio following each round which is nice! Fingers crossed these will be fine...

try feeding them bloodworms.they can never resist it.sorry to hear about your molly.but as longs as they are acting fine they should be ok

Will get some bloodworms for them tomorrow. The new additions are one male and one female (I think!) and the male is already getting it on with the original Molly I had, so that must be a good sign!
