hi, many years ago i was into tropical fish, and had put my tanks into storage, well now the grandson wants to get into tropical fish so i gave him my tanks, and going to start with guppies, i've helped him set everything up, waiting for the tank to clear and water set for a week before he gets any fish. so now my question, back years ago I rremember a kind of fish food that we, now this is vague, had to get a starter that we would put into the jar with a mix of ceral and yeast and a clear plastic piece that worms would crawl up on, anyone ever hear of that????????, if so, can u tell me the correct way to do it, and where i can get the starter?????????, thanks, jerry

Hi Jerry,

There are several of us "old guys" here who did the hobby years ago or who have done if for a long time. We are all now having quite a lot of fun learning of and practicing a relatively (1980) new thing in the hobby called "Fishless Cycling" to prepare a good biofilter prior to ever exposing fish to ammonia or nitrite(NO2) since we now know those things cause permanent damage.

Have a read of our "Nitrogen Cycle", Fishless Cycle and other startup articles in the Beginners Resource Center. It can be tough getting through the weeks of it with a young person but on the other hand its better than trying to explain why their new pets "died while we were trying to get the water ready."

Welcome to TFF!
