I read on wikipedia that the bushynose pleco needs wood to help it digest its food.   Is that really a necessity?   Is so, what type of wood should I put in the aquarium---will any small debarked tree branch work or is a certain type of wood necessary?   What else should I feed the pleco?

Bristlenose Plecos (also called Bushynose) do require wood, as they like to rasp it. Bogwood/driftwood is what they like.
You can either buy this from a LFS or find it near a waterway.

Freshly cut wood usually contains sap, which is unhealthy for the BN, as well as the rest of the tank.

Algae/Vege wafers and Zucchini are good to feed, since BNs cannot only eat algae, as they will most likely starve to death.

Also, I'd boil the wood first if you use found wood to kill any disease organisms, this will lso make the wood sink better.
