Feeder Fish To Chiclids?

I didn't know that was illegal over there. What if you have a fish that won't take pellets, like needlenose gar?

doesn't matter what fish it is.....it's still illegal.

This, along with the inch per gallon guideline, are probably tied for the most misunderstood concept behind aquatics. Per the Animal Welfare Act 2006, it is actually illegal to not feed live food to an animal that will only eat live food. A grey area, without a doubt, as there are very few animals that require this, but it is not illegal.

It is generally a bad idea to feed store bought live feeder fish to any fish you own. This is one of the best ways around to introduce diseases. Live feeder fish are nowhere near nutritionally complete, this is why folks who own fish that will only eat live usually gut load the feeder fish to increase nutritional value.

So... breed them yourself, take good care of them and fatten them up on a great diet before feeding them. But only in the case of fish that absolutely will not take prepared food.
Taking good care of them also covers you for animal cruelty stuff... just because they're going to be eaten doesn't mean they should be housed inappropriately, and I believe that is the basis for some cruelty cases when animals for meat are found in appalling conditions.

Interesting - I was taking what I read from PFK as gospel. Maybe I should think again in the future, especially considering I already take any of their product reviews with a pinch of salt due to their advertising tie-ins.

There is no need for it unless you have a fish that will not take prepared foods (the only one I know of is needlenose gar). They will introduce pathogens sooner or later, are nutritionally incomplete and unbalanced, and can increase aggression.

Its not illegal. It is however a very vague subject. The law is not to cause intentional additional harm i belive. In which case lettin a fish be eaten cleanly not picked at and bullied is fine. Besides how on earth do i stop my 50+ femal guppys with my 10 males eating their fry?

Don't see the diff between feeding live fish to fish and feeding live crickets etc to reptiles, its still life. Also from what ive read feeder fish may have something which could harm your fish, so unless you where going to breed your own and make sure they are all healthy (im assuming 'feeder fish' will be as cheaply housed and fed as possible by the breeders) so as somebody else said unless your fish wont take processed food only reason your really doing it is to see something die, to put it bluntly.

i feed my jaguar and oscars feeder shrimp sold in the uk yeah theyre not fish but princibles still apply as its a living animal i also buy crickets hoppers or locust every now and again from a local reptile shop its not cheap and i dont do it to as quoted (only reason your really doing it is to see something die, to put it bluntly.) i dont enjoy the fact an animal/creature is dieing but i do enjoy watching my fish acting as they would in the wild as a treat i wouldnt buy goldfish as they would have to be biten to pieces to be eaten.
which i wouldnt want to watch but at the end of the day in this world we live in fish eat fish we eat fish aswell as many other animals its and when a fisherman pulls out thousands of fish from the sea its a much worse experience then being swallowed by a bigger fish, they just dont have the luxury of having somebody else catch kill and prepare the small fish for them.

If its illegal in the US (which i thought i heard someone say, may have misread) then why does every local fish store around here have minnows selling for feeder fish?
