I've taken up reading as a hobby lately (I've always been a reader, a rare thing for my age group ;) , but now I have to have a book to read at all time  ) and I'm curious as to what books other TFF members liked.

My favorites are:
The Dark Tower series (Stephen King)
The greatest books I have ever read, Roland Deschain will stay in my mind forever.

Cell (Stephen King)
I just finished this. This is the most gory and fast paced book I have read, and I loved it. This reminded me of I am Legend, by Richard Matheson (Another good book) but it was still very different and original.

I'm going to pick up The Stand (Stephen King, again :p ) soon, before I go mad without a book to read

What did you enjoy reading?

Have you read "The Dark Half" by Stephen King, one of my favourites. I love any true crime books and crime stories in general. I'm reading Agatha Christie at the moment, can't beat the old writers!
My favourite book ever is "The Colour Purple" by Alice Walker. Probably not the most happiest book in the world but a fantastic one nonetheless.

I love books :D

All Discworld stuff, harry potter, amulet of samarkand series, his dark materials, a series of unfortunate events (Got bored by 10, but so annoyed I trudged through till the crappy ending), David Gemmell and a load of random stuff

I haven't read that yet (The Dark Half), but I'm sure I'll get around to it eventually, I'm going through one or two books every week

Thats exactly what I do! I find a good book and can't put it down. No sooner have I finished it my eldest daughter starts reading it! Another bookworm in the house, we've got enough books to fill a library! :D

I like reading too, but i rarely actually finish a book because i start a new one half way through  .

My favourite novels have to be Shogun by James Clavell(all of his books rock), K-pax 1 and 2 by Gene Brewer(although the film was good, it wasn't really anything like the books, and i've not read 3 yet) and the Halo series.

Non-fiction wise Nature Aquarium World by Takashi Amano is definitely my favourite :D .

I cannot live without books. I am always reading something. (Ivanhoe at the moment. Thinking of writing a modern English update: Gotta Ho.:))

Favorites:
Dune - Frank Herbert
Lord of Light - Roger Zelazney
Snow Crash - Neal Stephenson
Watership Down - Richard Adams
Small Gods - Terry Pratchett
Living the Martial Way - Forrest Morgan
The Black Company - Glen Cook
Radical Brewing - Randy Mosher
Kim - Kipling

(Mostly Sci-Fi and Epic Fantasy in the favorites, but I'll truly read anything I can.)

I got two new books today (so I can start one immediately after I finish the first), It and The Shining

I know I need to break off from the Stephen King books (You guys read from a large variety of authors) but I've become accustomed to his writing style, and nothing else is interesting enough to pick up
I'll find a new author after I read It, The Shining, 'Salems Lot, The Stand, Pet Sematary, The Dark Half, and what ever else I may find :p

I totally understand where you are coming from. You get an author who's voice and manner you really like, and who brings a certain ambiance to his books, and you get stuck on him. I used to be that way with Zelazney. I enjoy what Stephen King I have read, but the first book I ever read of his was The Stand, and I didn't pick up another book of his for 10 years, not because I hated it, but because it was so mindblowingly awesome that I dead knew he would never be able to top it. (And he hasn't yet, though I am told I ought to read It and then reassess.)

That said, when you run out of SK, Tim Powers has a similar sort of creepy ambiance. He's less matter of fact, but I get a similar vibe from his books and the better of King's. Neil Gaiman can get like that too (but more fairy tale-ish).

As for scarey, I've always felt that Harlan Ellison makes Steven King look like Dr. Seuss. ;)

I've still not got around to getting any Terry Pratchett books yet  I have read a few Stephen King books and to be honest I'd rather have my teeth pulled, the first half of all his books drag on and are like watching paint dry.

I tend to prefer commercial authors:

Dan Brown
Harry Potter books
Andy McNab
Tom Clancy
Chris Ryan
Clive Barker
And a large number of autobiographies.

I read pretty much constantly; at any given time I have at least 3 books going. However, I have very few authors I consistently read, especially for non-fiction. I read a ton of non fiction, generally on topics like animal behavior, animal cognicion, animal welfare, nutrition, substance abuse, psychological disorders, serial killers, etc.
However, I also greatly enjoy sci-fi, horror, animal epics, and satire. So, I do read a fair amount of James Morrow, David Sedaris, Neal Stephenson, Laurell K. Hamilton (not any more though, thanks to her writing degenerating into pure crap), Gabriel King, Tad Williams, etc. And I'm always open to miscellaneous reads from various authors if the plot is attractive and the writing is artful.
Also, though I don't count it really as reading, I do enjoy graphic novels greatly. I enjoy the series Fables, The Maxx, and a few odd others, esp. in the anthro genre. I just purchased Pride of Baghdad and LOVED it.
