hey guys i just got a fluval 205 and its been great. its really quiet and moves quite a bit of water.

my question is, there is a noise that this filter makes that kinda concerns me. Im realativley new to fishkeeping so if this is a stupid question i appologize. My filter makes this noise about every 2 minutes or so. Its really hard to describe but if i had to compare it to something i would have to say a washing machine. followed by this noise is a burst of bubbles from the output. i also noticed that moving the filter causes the same noise and also caused more bubbles.

i have read that sometimes if air is inside the filter it can cause this.

any advice?

thanks in advance guys

As you have read, this is just air inside the canister that hasn't escaped yet. Soon it will stop once all the airs out, both my fluvals stopped doing this about 20mins after I started them up.

You can try pumping the prime lever thing, that can help release the air, or genlty give the filter a shake until there's no more air coming out when you shake it.

Nothing at all to worry about :).

If this happends a while after the initial start, make sure the cover is sealed good. Check the hoses and fittings and make sure no air bubbles are around the intake

Agree, its simply air in the system, a gentle shake is all thats needed. I have a 405 which I use on my Malawi, its an absolute bith to seal properly and leaks for ages (couple of hours) once started, I need to stand on it to seal properly - hey ho it eventually stops leaking when the suction builds up - but ....I have found by releasing the side catches slightly I can actually induce a quantity of air into the system which is defused greatly by the time it squirts out across the surface of my tank, this happens every 30 seconds or so and thus provides added oxygen saturation into the tank. Not a bad thing.

I have just purchased on of these, is it just me or are they very noisy? I can really hear the motor spinning. Seems very odd to me as people seem to comment on how quiet they are?

Cheers

Have you bought 2nd hand?

I would guess, without hearing it you may have a knackered impeller.

Hey.

It is brand new, I have been reading that they can be noisy for the first 24 hours and then they shut up ;)

Will keep an eye on it and see what happens. Alot of people mention the air bubbles, but it is not the same noise as you get from trapped air in the impeller
