i have a 18 gal tank and a 100w heater. i've set my heater on 26 degrees but the water is about 21 degrees. when i take the heater out of the water its ownly slightly warm. then when i leave it out of the water it becomes hot.

is 100watts suitable for a 18gal?

you are lucky the heater did not explode!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! never leave it switched on out of the water.

100 is imho enough for your tank, they do however, all suffer from the same problems, the thermostat is not set to a universal standard. so 21c with one heater will give you 18c. if you do the test with a different heater 21c may give you 22c. only way around this, it seem to me, is to use a "in tank" thermometer, and use that reading to set, any heater you use. using the heater scale simply as a rough set up, before fine tuning using your tank thermometer reading
