Has anyone kept fathead minnows before? My county gives them out for free for mosquito control. Would they work in my 20g outdoor pond?

Ordinary looking aren't they ? Male on the left. Female on the right. Photos courtesy of Jonah's Aquarium.

Hey ! A fish is a fish. A guy gets something different he's never had before and sometimes they surprise you and have something about them you like. You have to live with them awhile to find out. This is a cold water fish and you could keep them outside . Have fun with them.

they look very cute
some can be very red

I kept them in a tank. I liked them - they're characters. Kinda ugly, true, but some very fine people wouldn't win beauty shows. For a pond, they'll eat the mosquitoes. But they are well camouflaged, so you won't see them a whole lot.

I have a few. Haven’t seen them in a few weeks, but that’s typical. They are the last to eat for my patio tank, and wont come out from the forest until an hour or so after the flakes are added.

The fish arrived today! The county gave me 12 fathead minnows for free.
They are already eating the mosquito larvae that are in the pond.
