Fish Gatherer
Hi guys...
I recently bought 3 large platies (biggest I've seen, probably have some sword blood) 1 male (bought about 2-3 weeks ago) and two females (bought 3 days ago). They were the largest fish in their tanks at the LFS, and it seems that they consistently got to the food first. The male looks pregnant (but no doubt that he is a male) and both the females gave birth since I've owned them and STILL look pregnant (they look like they'd been inflated with a bike pump up the backside before they dropped their fry).
Now that they are in my tank, with more average-sized platies and a shy bristlenose - they are STILL the first to get their noses in the food. It doesn't matter what I put in there - flakes, pellets, worms, beans, peas, lettuce - they always have to eat it first. They just shove everything else out of the way, I'm not even sure they realise they're doing it. The only way I can get any food to the other fish is by putting more in the tank than the big ones can eat - and if I do that I'm only going to make them fatter. Most of the other fish just had a fast of about a week because I was on holiday and I don't want to stop feeding them again - but if I gave feeding a rest the big ones would be back to eating everything when I started feeding again!
I can't blame the LFS for overfeeding them because I can see how hard it is to stop them flogging everything I put in the tank. The tank is heavily decorated and I don't want to disturb the planting by trying to net them when I feed the others. Any ideas? They are obese. They look quite ridiculous actually. It's almost funny but - ya.
