i just got a 35 gallon tank and im wondering what the fastest way to cycle it is.

i can either use pure ammonia, the product cycle, or i can take some gravel/water from my mostly cycled 10 gallon tank

whats the fastest/overall best way to cycle this new tank ?

(it will be heated and filtered)

Fastest way would be to get a mature filter media and put in the new filter since water and gravel (unless under gravel)don't contain good bacteria

i dont have a filter i could use, whats my next best option ? thanks

The fastest way is always mature media. There is a thread around here somewhere on buying a seeded sponge. It seems to be working well so far for the person who bought it.

The other option is to make friends with one of the LFS and ask for a sample of some of their media... offering a little money for it couldn't hurt. Use that to seed your new filter with bacteria and you should be cycled in a week or so. (Assuming you dose with ammonia, or add fish immediately and do a fish-in cycle!) If you just let it sit in an empty tank, the bacteria will die off without a source of ammonia.

Here it is.

I'm just getting rid of some old carbon media. It won't work as carbon, but it has plenty of bacteria. If you're in the UK I could post, so it doesn't go to waste :)

how long do they live for? like im surprised bacteria would live throughout the shipping process unless they are sent in water?

is there a filter in the 10g?

there is but the 10 gallon needs to be filtered (especially right now just added 2 more fish

The place that sells 'active' filters is angelsplus.com. They are sent in water. You could also put a couple handfuls of gravel from your 10 gal in a mesh bag or pantyhose and put that in your tank. That will speed up a fishless cycle.

They are sent in water. Here's the latest update on the active filter sponge.

Take it with a grain of salt. Ultimately you have to decide if it is worth your time or money.

you dont need to remove the filter just squeeze it into the new tank

ahh that should work, should i do this with the product cycle? or just use one or the other?

Is your 10g fully cycled? If it is then remove one filter pad and put it in your new one. You will have a small spike. But the new tank will cycle pretty quickly.

Don't squeeze it into the tank if that whats you are going to do. Squeeze it over the filter media. However no where near as effective as what I said by using half if the filter media in your small tank.

Don't use any cycle product they don't work.

There is some bacteria in the gravel, so much so that it would be worth using, if you place some that is taken from the very top layer, about a handful and place it in a filter sock and run it in the tank it will speed up the cycle process.

You could ask for someone to post you some media, most of the bacteria should survive the postal process providing it remains wet.
