You will find that the fanciest guppies available, from the internet or local breeders, will require the exact same care as the most common of the guppies that you have from the LFS. If you provide a clean tank with a reasonable pH and a decently hard, but not overly hard, water and you do weekly or so water changes, the fish will prosper. The next step after that is to take those same fish and breed them to obtain superior fry. When you raise the fry to a nice salable size, don't forget that one of your options is to sell the fish at auction at a local fish club's fund raiser auction. Although the local club will probably take a 25% to 30% cut of the gross sales price, the remaining cash portion that you will receive will likely be better than anything you could set up with the LFS. I sell all of my surplus fish at a local club's auction, sometimes even my own club's auction. I find that I can often take care of my fish food and a bit more by the sales that I make through my local club's auction. That does not mean that I ever walk away from a local club's auction in the green. There is always something at a club auction that tempts me to spend every penny that I get on some "new to me" fish. That is a part of the appeal of club auctions after all.
